Summary

Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle's mother has disappeared。 While tracing her steps on a car trip from Ohio to Idaho with her grandparents, Salamanca tells a story to pass the time about a friend named Phoebe Winterbottom whose mother vanished and who received secret messages after her disappearance。 One of them read, "Don't judge a man until you have walked two moons in his moccasins。" Despite her father's warning that she is "fishing in the air," Salamanca hopes to bring her home。 By drawing strength from her Native American ancestry, she is able to face the truth about her mother。 Walk Two Moons won the 1995 Newbery Medal。

You have lost everything。 Your mom, your home, your friends。 Everything。。。it’s all gone。 That is the reality for Salamanca Tree Hiddle。 When her mom disappears, Salamanca (also known as Sal) is forced to move away from her hometown Kentucky, and start her life all over again。 But Sal is different than everyone else。 She has long black hair that goes does to her legs, she has a strange name, an odd compassion for spiders, but worst of all, Sal's mom is mysteriously gone。With unanswered questions You have lost everything。 Your mom, your home, your friends。 Everything。。。it’s all gone。 That is the reality for Salamanca Tree Hiddle。 When her mom disappears, Salamanca (also known as Sal) is forced to move away from her hometown Kentucky, and start her life all over again。 But Sal is different than everyone else。 She has long black hair that goes does to her legs, she has a strange name, an odd compassion for spiders, but worst of all, Sal's mom is mysteriously gone。With unanswered questions lingering in the air, Sal sets off on a road trip with her grandparents to finally find her mom。To pass the time on this trip, Sal tells the story of Phoebe Winterbottom。 Phoebe has an interesting life story, and thankfully, it occupies Sal and her grandparents through the long drive。 However she can’t put off the grief much longer, and she soon has to face reality。 You may find yourself on a long road, telling a story to pass the never ending time。 It can be easy to put off our pain, but you can’t put it off forever。 Will Sal see reality, or will distraction and the busyness of the world continue to be a wall against Sal and what’s right in front of her? 。。。more

Excellent。 Written from the perspective of a 13 year old, I probably won’t hand it to my daughter until then due to some of the themes。 But the writing was fantastic, the twists and turns were satisfying, and the description of the Lewiston grade was spot on。Only complaint I have is with the audio version, which was also excellent aside from the consistent mispronunciation of Coeur d’Alene。

Well written, but really sad。

Oh my fucking god。Holy shit。You know, at the beginning, I was like: why the fuck did my school give a bunch of 10th graders a middle grade book? But then I read it, and I understood。 (Btw I just finished reading it so it may seem a tad over dramatic)。Who let this book be this good? Who is the idiot that made the beginning so fucking annoying? I was like stfu most of the first half of the book。 But then, oh then, there was the biggest plot twist in the fucking world。 Oh my god。 I loved it!! I loved the way that Sal's relationship with her mother is written, as well as the storyline of Phoebe's mother。 It's rare to see it done so well。 The notion of having lived a tiny life。。。 the wonder of being missed only when you're gone。 I also found the reveal at the end of Mrs。 Cadaver's relationship with Sal's dad incredibly relieving, haha。 Phoebe was aggravating but understandable/realistic and I really enjoyed reading her through Sal's perspective and felt that same pity that Sal did。 I d I loved the way that Sal's relationship with her mother is written, as well as the storyline of Phoebe's mother。 It's rare to see it done so well。 The notion of having lived a tiny life。。。 the wonder of being missed only when you're gone。 I also found the reveal at the end of Mrs。 Cadaver's relationship with Sal's dad incredibly relieving, haha。 Phoebe was aggravating but understandable/realistic and I really enjoyed reading her through Sal's perspective and felt that same pity that Sal did。 I didn't like how people kept telling Sal not to cut her hair even if she wanted to and how Ben kept touching her in the beginning and saying she flinched。。。 I was confused as a kid as to why her feelings changed for him。 I remember being so mad because of how the teacher reads everyone's private journals aloud to the class - and honestly it still pisses me off a bit, lol。 Miscellaneous things that have stuck by me with this book for years and years since this reread: blackberry kisses and muesli without milk (the first time I had ever even heard of muesli ever, actually)。 。。。more

A dream of a novel。 In fact。。。of two novels, for this story has another embedded within。 Both are fabulous in their different ways。 The young heroine embarks on a journey to recover her lost mum, while her loving family listens enraptured to her funny, childish story she spins to amuse them and pass the time。 However, her own story, and her mother's, is also moving alongside and brings a deeper and darker undertone until both stories merge in a shattering moment that will leave you astonished an A dream of a novel。 In fact。。。of two novels, for this story has another embedded within。 Both are fabulous in their different ways。 The young heroine embarks on a journey to recover her lost mum, while her loving family listens enraptured to her funny, childish story she spins to amuse them and pass the time。 However, her own story, and her mother's, is also moving alongside and brings a deeper and darker undertone until both stories merge in a shattering moment that will leave you astonished and very moved。 。。。more

Sal's Gram and Gramps take her on a journey across country to find her mom。 On the way she entertains them with stories of her friend Phoebe。This book definitely deserved the Newbery Medal。 Sal's Gram and Gramps take her on a journey across country to find her mom。 On the way she entertains them with stories of her friend Phoebe。This book definitely deserved the Newbery Medal。 。。。more

I liked the book but I was hoping that sal's mother would still be alive。 But sadly she wasn't。 When people say something is like a roller coaster。 This book was。 You did not know what was going to happen next。 You didn't know what to expect。 This book is amazing。 It's definitely a adventure。 I liked the book but I was hoping that sal's mother would still be alive。 But sadly she wasn't。 When people say something is like a roller coaster。 This book was。 You did not know what was going to happen next。 You didn't know what to expect。 This book is amazing。 It's definitely a adventure。 。。。more

For me personally, this was a beautiful, sad story。 I cried。 For my teacher self, reading this with 9 year olds in mind, I think it's a little too much。 For me personally, this was a beautiful, sad story。 I cried。 For my teacher self, reading this with 9 year olds in mind, I think it's a little too much。 。。。more

I know I've read this before and I think I actually liked it better this time。 I tend to be hot and cold on Sharon Creech's books and this is one of hers I prefer。 I may have needed to get some more distance from my own loss in order to really appreciate this。 The dual storytelling I don't think helps the structure。。。both stories are interesting and it sets up the reveal but also does some major slowing down of story in spots。 I know I've read this before and I think I actually liked it better this time。 I tend to be hot and cold on Sharon Creech's books and this is one of hers I prefer。 I may have needed to get some more distance from my own loss in order to really appreciate this。 The dual storytelling I don't think helps the structure。。。both stories are interesting and it sets up the reveal but also does some major slowing down of story in spots。 。。。more

This was actually the first book that I can remember that I have ever read。 It will make you laugh, it will make you cry and you will wish that you never have to say goodbye。 It is one of my most favorite books, perhaps because I could relate to the age of the main character and what she was going through as I read it? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The book, Walk Two Moons was a fabulous book because the plots are intertwined。 Both plots are around the main character, her name is Salamanca, Sal for short。 The story is set in Bybanks, Kentucky。 The genre seems like realistic fiction because it could really happen。 The plot was a bit complicated in jumping from story to story。 You should read this if you're okay with sad endings。By Eddie and Lana The book, Walk Two Moons was a fabulous book because the plots are intertwined。 Both plots are around the main character, her name is Salamanca, Sal for short。 The story is set in Bybanks, Kentucky。 The genre seems like realistic fiction because it could really happen。 The plot was a bit complicated in jumping from story to story。 You should read this if you're okay with sad endings。By Eddie and Lana 。。。more

I vividly remember reading this book in 4th grade, I had just moved to AZ and I remember my teacher getting choked up reading it with us。 When I was going to check out my latest haul at the library this book was on a little end cap display and I decided on a whim to revisit it。 I am proud to report, it held up & was just as magical years later。
